SustainabiLILY: In conversation with Wouter

At Qualily, we believe in growing our lilies as naturally as possible. A big part of that is biological crop protection—using good bugs to keep the bad ones away. But how does that actually work? We asked Wouter van Kester, our biology expert, to explain!

“Instead of using chemicals, we introduce tiny beneficial insects that hunt down pests like thrips and aphids. It’s a natural balance: as long as these good bugs are in the greenhouse, harmful insects don’t stand a chance.”

“Scouting is key. We constantly check the crops to see if the natural predators are doing their job. If needed, we adjust their numbers to keep everything in balance.”

“Almost never. We only use them in emergencies, but thanks to our approach, that hardly ever happens.”
